What is VoIP?
Internet Telephony or Voice-over-the-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) is a revolutionary form of carrying voice and even video information over a broadband internet connection. Traditionally telephone calls is sent over an analog connection (your home phone line) back to a central office somewhere in your local geographic area, using what is called 'circuit switching' technology. Circuit Switching is very inefficient since that the telephone system dedicates resources on connections that are set up but not continuously being utilized. Also, traditional technology is over-engineered leading to drastically inflated costs. With the advent of the internet came to light a new technology, packet switching, which splits up the information (whatever it happens to be) into chunks or blocks of data and sends them down a shared connection to their destination. This shared connection can be utilized by anyone, at any time, thus removing the need for a dedicated connection that may not get utilized all the time. VoIP services convert your voice into a digital signal, much like how a Compact Disc (CD) operates. This digital information is transmitted over your high-speed internet connection to NuFone to which we deliver your telephone call to the destination that you dialed. VoIP makes sense, in terms infrastructure requirements and economics of deployment. Large businesses have been benefiting from VoIP for a few years now, but the technology has advanced to the point where small businesses and regular consumers can save a significant amount of money with minimal or no investment.
